It was a disappointing night for Manchester United as they were knocked out from the League Cup in the third round itself, after a 1-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham United at Old Trafford. An early goal in the first-half from Manuel Lanzini was enough to hand the Hammers the win on the night.

The two sides had just met this weekend. On that occasion, it was the Red Devils who came out of the game with a win. A late goal from Jesse Lingard against the club he spent the second half of last season on loan at, handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side all three points on that occasion. Interestingly, both times, the away side won.

While Lingard could not repeat his heroics in this game, there was a pretty big shout for a penalty when it appeared that Mark Noble had brought his former teammate down.

The West Ham United captain claimed though that it was a dive from Lingard and even joked that he was not doing that when with the Hammers. While speaking with Sky Sports and as reported by the Mirror, Noble said:

"“That’s football, he dived and I told him off for screaming, funnily enough he didn’t really do it at our place but he does it here!”"

It did appear that Noble had brought Lingard down in the box. The referee waved away the appeals and there was no VAR on the night to give things a second look.

Noble appears to believe that Lingard dived. And that is his perspective of the incident. But there have been quite a few penalty incidents surrounding the Red Devils lately.

Even in the previous game against West Ham United, there were a couple of penalty shouts that were not given but at the end of the day, it did not have an impact on the result on that occasion.

What is done is done though. Now, the Red Devils must focus on their upcoming game against Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend.
