It is safe to say that Manchester United have one of the strongest squads in world football today. The competition for places is very high all over the pitch, so much so that quite a few good players might not end up getting the minutes that they want this season at the Theatre of Dreams.

As a result, several players have departed Old Trafford on loan this summer. One of them is Andreas Pereira.

The 25-year-old spent the previous season on loan at Lazio but did not have a great time there. Now, he is with Brazilian club, Flamengo. And the start to his time there appears to have been positive.

One of the most interesting things about the move though has been Pereira’s positional change as he has played as a second defensive midfielder recently. When asked about it, as reported by Lance, Flamengo manager Renato Gaucho said:

"“He is versatile, he is a player I talked to even before joining Flamengo. He is a player who has been tested in various positions out there for his quality. But he told me that he likes a player as a second defensive midfielder. So, that’s where I’ve been putting him, in this position he’s been helping us, he’s been playing well.”"

Pereira has undergone a positional change after leaving Manchester United on loan

For most of his career, Pereira has played further up the pitch in an attacking midfield role. Thus, it will be very interesting to see how he does as a defensive midfielder.

This positional change could possibly have implications on his Manchester United future as well. At this point of time, the Red Devils do appear a bit short of options when it comes to their double pivot in midfield. If Pereira can shine in a similar role away on loan, it is very possible that he could end up competing for a spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team when he returns.

Coming through the youth ranks, he was one of the most highly-rated youngsters at Manchester United. But it is safe to say that he has not delivered on his potential yet as he has not quite found his feet in senior football. It is very promising though that he has made a good start at Flamengo.
