It is safe to say that Jesse Lingard has been in brilliant form in recent times and probably deserves more minutes on the pitch than he has gotten for Manchester United this season. He was brilliant in the second half of last season while on loan at West Ham United and has scored for both club and country recently as well.

But it was his misplaced pass deep in stoppage time that led to Young Boys’ winner against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League group stage opening game this season. Lingard had come in as a second half substitute.

Of course, mistakes can happen in football and the most important thing is how the Red Devils bounce back from this defeat.

Lingard himself appears to be very disappointed by the mistake he made and sent an emotional message to Manchester United fans. He tweeted out:

Lingard’s Manchester United future remains up in the air

Lingard has not featured as much as he would have liked this season and is yet to make his first start. That is why, the mistake would have been even more disappointing for him as he is looking to break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI.

His future at Manchester United appears uncertain at the moment as well. Lingard is in the final 12 months of his contract right now and an extension does not seem near as of now, with him not playing a lot of regular football at Old Trafford in recent times.

On the other hand, we have already seen how good he can be during his loan spell at West Ham United in the second half of last season. Thus, it does feel very likely that he could be headed out of the club in the future unless things take a massive turn over the coming months.
