Manchester United’s start to the Premier League season has been brilliant. They have won three and drawn one of their first four games of the season and currently sit at the top of the table. While Chelsea and Liverpool also have the same points and goal difference, it is the Red Devils who have been most prolific infront of goal out of the three. Unfortunately though, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side could not carry their form into the UEFA Champions League group stage opener.

Heading into the game against Young Boys, it is safe to say that Manchester United were the heavy favourites. And they started the game very well, with Cristiano Ronaldo finding the back of the net from a sensational Bruno Fernandes assist.

But things started to turn after that. At first, Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off, which led to the manager tweaking his formation and tactics. After half-time, there were five defenders on the pitch but Young Boys still managed to score twice to get the big win.

There is some positive news for Manchester United though, as it looks like Fernandes could be close to agreeing a contract extension with the club.

Fernandes is close to Manchester United contract extension

While speaking on his YouTube channel and as reported by This is Futbol, Fabrizio Romano said regarding the situation:

"“Talks are underway between Bruno Fernandes, his agents and Manchester United, but his contract extension is getting really, really close.”"

It is safe to say that Fernandes extending his contract would be seen as a massive boost for Manchester United.

It is arguable that the Portuguese playmaker has been the club’s best player ever since arriving at Old Trafford in January of 2020. His consistency has been brilliant and his output absolutely incredible.

With Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho arriving in the summer, and with the likes of Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and many other top players already at the club, there is a solid chance that Manchester United could end their four season-long trophyless streak soon.
