It is certainly an exciting time to be a Manchester United fan. The club have made some incredible signings in the summer and are looking like one of the favourites for the Premier League title this season.

The arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton over the past couple of months mean that the Red Devils’ squad has incredible depth. But it also means that some of the players could possibly struggle for first-team minutes this season.

One player whose future appears to be in the air at this point of time is Jesse Lingard. He did brilliantly on loan at West Ham United in the second half of last season and appears to be back in the England national team picture as well. But it does feel like first-team opportunities at Manchester United could be limited for him.

As reported by ESPN, Lingard has rejected a new contract at the club as he seeks assurances regarding his first-team chances. He is in the final year of his current deal right now.

Does Lingard have a future at Manchester United?

There is no doubt that Lingard has been in brilliant form in recent times and is arguably playing his best football right now. But considering the depth of the Red Devils’ current squad, it does feel like he could find first-team opportunities hard to come by.

Capable of playing as an attacking midfielder as well as on both the wings, Lingard will have to compete with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Donny van de Beek and a few others for minutes on the pitch.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 9 goals and provided 5 assists in 16 appearances for West Ham United last season. But in this campaign, he has only featured for 4 minutes for Manchester United till now.

Of course, it is still very early in the campaign and it will be interesting to see how things turn out for Lingard over the course of the season.
