Manchester United are close to signing world-class defender

It was just yesterday that Manchester United managed to agree a Jadon Sancho deal with Borussia Dortmund. The Red Devils have been linked with the English winger for years now and it looks like he will finally be playing at the Theatre of Dreams come next season.

But the club are not expected to stop there. After going four seasons without a single trophy, they are expected to continue to make a splash in the summer transfer window. And a new centre-back appears to be on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wish list as well.

And it looks like they might be making a lot of progress in this regard. As reported by ESPN, Manchester United are close to finalising a deal for Raphael Varane.

Varane only has a year left on his current deal with Real Madrid and as a result, it looks like a move away from Santiago Bernabeu might very well be a possibility this summer for the French World Cup winner.

Varane has been heavily linked with Manchester United this summer

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof formed the first choice pairing in the heart of defence for the Red Devils last season. And while they have managed to form a formidable duo, it does feel like it is an area of the pitch that the team could further improve in.

Someone like Varane would definitely be a magnificent signing for the club. He has been one of the best defenders in Europe for years now and could immediately make this defence better.

The French international also has tremendous experience of winning, having lifted trophies at both club and international level. And Solskjaer’s side could definitely do with someone who has that sort of pedigree.

A deal is not over the line yet though and it is worth pointing out that the Red Devils have been linked with the likes of Jules Kounde, Pau Torres, Nikola Milenkovic, Cristian Romero and many others recently as well.
