Signing a new centre-back could very well be one of the priorities for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in this summer transfer window. As a result, it should not come as a surprise that a number of top defenders have been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks.

One of them is Pau Torres. The 24-year-old has been a standout performer for Villarreal over the last couple of years and is now a regular first-team player in the Spanish national team as well.

Solskjaer will know about his qualities very well, having seen him put in a brilliant display in the Europa League final on his way to winning the trophy. And if the Red Devils were able to sign him, it would be seen as a major coup.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, the club are making progress over a potential move for Torres. There is growing belief that a deal can be struck to sign Torres although any move is likely to take place after Spain’s EURO 2020 campaign. The centre-back is believed to have a release clause in the region of €60 million in his current deal with Villarreal.

Torres can be a brilliant fit in Manchester United’s defence

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have served as the duo in the heart of Manchester United’s defence for the past year or so. And while they have done well, there is a feeling that it is an area where there can be further improvement.

Signing somebody like Torres would certainly help in that regard. There is no question that he is a good defender. But the fact that he is left-footed, makes him a perfect defensive partner for Maguire as well.

He is not the only defender that the Red Devils have been linked with in the recent past though. And it looks like they could have the likes of Nikola Milenkovic, Cristian Romero, Jules Kounde, Raphael Varane and many others on their radar as well.
