Manchester United are expected to make a splash in the summer transfer window and a new centre-back appears to be high on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wish list.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof formed a formidable partnership in the heart of defence last season. But it does feel like that is an area on the pitch where the club can improve further and will try to make signings in over the course of the summer.

One man who the Red Devils appear to have on their radar is Raphael Varane. The Real Madrid star has been one of the best defenders in Europe for years now.

But with just a year left on his current deal, it looks like he could leave Real Madrid this summer. And the Red Devils appear to be interested in bringing the French World Cup winner to Old Trafford.

Manchester United handed Varane transfer blow

As reported by El Confidencial (via Express), Varane wants a return to France and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in the defender.

This, of course, would be a blow to the Red Devils’ hopes of signing the centre-back. They have been linked with Varane for years now, dating as far back as to when Sir Alex Ferguson was the manager of the club. But a move has never materialised.

One would feel that if Manchester United are to ever sign the 28-year-old, this summer provides them the best opportunity to do so. But of course, when a player of his quality is on the move, a number of clubs are expected to be interested.

Now, it remains to be seen where the defender will end up if he does indeed leave Real Madrid this summer. The Spanish giants are expected to look for a transfer fee in the region of €60 million for the French international.
