Signing a new centre-back in the summer might be near the top of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wish list as Manchester United aim to challenge for trophies in the upcoming season.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof served as the first-choice centre-back pairing for the Norwegian manager last season. And while they did form a formidable partnership in the heart of their defence, there is a feeling that it is an area where the Red Devils can improve even further. As a result, they have been linked with a wide number of centre-backs over the past couple of months.

One of those players is Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane. The French World Cup winner’s contract runs out in the summer of 2022 and at this point of time, it is not looking likely that he will agree a new deal.

As reported by Defensa Central (via Express), Varane is believed to be looking for a salary similar to that of the incoming David Alaba (€10-11 million per year). But Real Madrid are willing to offer him €9 million. On the other hand, Manchester United are willing to offer him as much as €12 million a year in wages.

Varane could be an incredible signing for Manchester United

Varane has been one of the best centre-backs in world football for quite some time now. His pedigree and abilities are unquestionable. And if the opportunity is indeed there to sign him, the Red Devils should not think twice before making a move.

The 28-year-old can be the perfect partner for Harry Maguire in the heart of the Red Devils’ defence and their playing styles should complement each other.

It will not easy to sign a player of his quality in the summer though because a number of other teams are expected to be interested as well if Varane becomes available. Thus, it remains to be seen if the club are able to bring him to Old Trafford.
