While Manchester United have made progress over the past couple of years under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, there is room for further improvement. After losing the Europa League final against Villarreal last Wednesday, the club are now without a trophy for four seasons. That is something that must change as soon as possible.

As a result, they are expected to be active in the upcoming summer transfer window. And one of the positions that they could be looking to improve in further is central defence.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have served as the first choice partnership in the heart of defence for Solskjaer through the course of this season and they have done a good job to say the least. The defence has looked much more solid this time around than it has in the recent past.

But even then, there is a feeling that the styles of Maguire and Lindelof do not complement that of each other. As a result, they are expected to make a move for another centre-back in the summer. And as reported by Manchester Evening News, Raphael Varane remains the most desirable option.

Manchester United have been linked with Varane in recent months

Varane is one of the most decorated defenders in the world today. He has enjoyed a tremendous career at Real Madrid and is a World Cup winner with France. It is remarkable that he is still just 28 years of age.

But with his contract set to run out in the summer of 2022, the La Liga giants might have to let him leave this summer rather than see him become a free agent a season later.

Thus, the Red Devils might have the chance to get their man. It won’t be easy though, because if the Frenchman was to leave, a number of other clubs are expected to be interested in his signature as well. Thus, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Varane.
