Manchester United leading the race to sign Serie A defender
Manchester United are expected to sign a defender in the upcoming summer transfer window. Although the duo of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof has done well in recent months and kept clean sheets on a consistent basis, there is the feeling that the club can make further improvements in the heart of defence.
The Red Devils have been linked with Fiorentina star Nikola Milenkovic in recent months. The Serbian has emerged as one of the best defenders in the Italian league over the past few years.
His current contract with the Italian side runs out in the summer of 2022 and it looks like he could be on his way out of the club soon.
As reported by Calciomercato (via The Hard Tackle) Fiorentina appear to be resigned to the idea of losing the defender at the end of the current season and Manchester United look to be in pole position in the race to sign him, although Inter Milan and AC Milan are also following the 23-year-old.

Milenkovic could prove to be a shrewd signing for Manchester United
Although Fiorentina sit at 14th in the Serie A table at this point of time, it would be wrong to think that Milenkovic is not capable of playing for a top side. While solid at the back, he is an asset on the other end of the pitch as well, having scored 11 goals in 126 appearances for the Italian side according to stats from Transfermarkt.
And with the futures of the likes of Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe up in the air at this point of time, it could be very important for the Red Devils to sign some quality centre-backs in the summer. Milenkovic could certainly turn out to be one of them.
The Serbian is believed to be available for a transfer fee of around €35 million, which can be considered as a bargain for a player of his quality in the modern day transfer market.
