It is hard to deny that Manchester United have made considerable progress over the past year or so under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and now find themselves second in the Premier League table.

Not too long ago, they were at the top of the table as well but have fallen flat over the past couple of months, allowing Manchester City to open up a 15 point gap although Solskjaer’s side do have a game in hand, in which they will take on Crystal Palace away at Selhurst Park.

One of the biggest reasons behind United’s recent dip in form has been their inability to get past the traditional ‘Big Six’. The Red Devils have managed to score only one goal against them in league play. That doesn’t make for good reading at all. And that does raise the question about whether Solskjaer is the man to eventually guide them to a Premier League title.

Craig Burley does not appear to believe so. As reported by Express, he told ESPN FC:

"“I think long term they need a managerial change there, as well as a personnel change.“The other way to look at it is it’s Manchester United, so whether they’re second, third or fourth, really it is irrelevant. This is a club that should be aiming for first.“I know City and Liverpool have been difficult teams to gauge yourself against but trust me, Liverpool will bounce back and they will go again, Chelsea will be stronger, City are not going to go away.“So there are teams around there that are going to pile the pressure on Man United.”"

Manchester United have struggled against the ‘Big Six’

Now, it is very possible that people are being too harsh about United’s record against the ‘Big Six’. While they have failed to score, they have not conceded many either after the 6-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur in the third league game of the season.

But the fact of the matter is that if a team wants to win the Premier League, they have to win these games. Beating the other teams can help one finish in the top four. And that is certainly an area that Solskjaer’s side need to work on moving forward.

At the end of the day, it is too early to make a decision regarding Solskjaer. He has done extremely well to bring this team to this point and now we will have to see whether they can take that final step under him and become Premier League champions once again.
