Manchester United have made huge strides over the past year or so under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. While the arrival of Bruno Fernandes is surely the biggest reason behind the recent progress, one cannot overlook the contributions of youngsters like Mason Greenwood either.

The teenager has come into the side and made an immediate impact. As a result, despite his young age, he is starting more often than not for one of the biggest clubs in the world. And these performances have been rewarded with a new long-term contract which will keep him at the club till 2025.

One of the complaints that the fans have had with Greenwood though is him playing at right-wing. Often considered one of the most lethal finishers at the club, many believe that they are not getting the most out of him when playing out wide.

And Solskjaer has hinted that he could soon be playing through the middle of the park once again but insists that at this stage of his career, it is best for him to play out wide, away from the physical centre-backs. As reported by Manchester Evening News, the manager said:

"“He can play right, centre forward, 10 and, at a stretch, maybe on the left. We just have to give him time to find his final position.“He’s a forward who moves really well along the line at the moment at his age and at his development. Physically, sometimes you don’t want to be right up in the mix and in the middle with the big brutal centre-backs next to you. So I think we’ve found that he can play both really.“That will be in the next year or two, if he’s going to be a No.9 or a forward or, as I said, as a shadow striker, in and around the goal. Definitely, we need him there even though his link up play and general play has improved a lot.”"

Mason Greenwood could be the Manchester United striker in the future

One of the areas that has been a problem for Manchester United in recent times is up front. Anthony Martial has failed to convince that he can be a long-term answer at striker. And while Edinson Cavani has impressed, at 34 years of age, he cannot be expected to start regularly or be a long-term solution either. The answer could be right under everyone’s noses though in the form of Greenwood.

While the Red Devils continue to be linked with Erling Haaland, and the Norwegian is a world-class player indeed, he will come at a premium transfer fee. On the other hand, Greenwood will cost nothing.

That is one to ponder about in the future though. For the time being, it looks like Greenwood will continue to operate down the right for Manchester United. And although he endured a tough start to the season, the teenager is finally starting to find his form once again, which is brilliant news for Solskjaer.
