One of the things on top of Manchester United’s wishlist in the upcoming summer transfer window will be a new centre-back. The club have suffered from defensive issues for quite some time now despite spending £80 million to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

Clearly, some defensive reinforcements are needed and the man to solve the Red Devils’ issues might be Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic. The 23-year-old Serbian is expected to available for £30 million in the summer with his contract quickly running down and there appearing to be very little chance of him extending his stay with the Italian side.

Thus, it might be a great opportunity for United to swoop in for the player who they have been linked with for a long time now, ever since Jose Mourinho was manager. But they won’t be without competition when it comes to securing his signature.

Crosstown rivals Manchester City are sitting at the top of the Premier League but that never satisfies their urge to go out and improve their squad further in the transfer market. And it looks like they want Milenkovic as well, as reported by Gazzetto dello Sport (via Express).

Milenkovic could be the replacement for Lindelof at Manchester United

Maguire and Lindelof have been the starting central defensive duo for Manchester United this season. And while they have done well on most occasions, their issues as a pairing to come to the forefront at times.

The duo lack pace with neither of them being the fastest. As a result, they are suspect to getting caught out of position often and as a result, it might not be a surprise if Solskjaer decides to drop one of them going forward and introduce some pace at the heart of his defence.

Milenkovic could end up being that man for the manager. But that is if the Red Devils are able to secure his signature, which won’t be an easy task considering Pep Guardiola’s side are interested in him as well.
