RB Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff has provided an update on the future of Manchester United transfer target Dayot Upamecano.

Manchester United’s 6-2 victory over Leeds United has raised the hopes of the fans. In what has been a topsy-turvy campaign for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, almost nobody would’ve expected this sort of resurrection in the Premier League.

Not only overambitious enthusiasts, but several football pundits have now begun to discuss United’s chances of knocking Liverpool off their perch. However, it is still early days in the 2020-21 domestic campaign, with only around one-third of the season played out till now.

United’s defence is perceived as a concern for Solskjaer’s team and a spot that opponents can easily exploit to carry out some severe damage. After all, they have conceded 21 goals from 13 matches in the Premier League this season, let alone other competitions.

Thus, it is clear that the Red Devils need a centre-back if they are to challenge for the title. And Solskjaer has reportedly kept a keen eye on RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano with hopes of making a swoop next summer. Bayern Munich and Liverpool are also interested in the 22-year-old France international.

Amidst these talks surrounding Upamecano’s future at Leipzig, the CEO of the German club has managed to provide a tiny update.

Speaking to Sky Sports Germany (via Bulinews), Oliver Mintzlaff declared that the club would love to have Upamecano for a long time but couldn’t predict anything now:

"“Everything is open and I would be happy if he stayed with us.”"

To be very honest, that does not sound like a man who is confident that he can keep hold of his star player.

Upamecano signed a contract renewal at RB Leipzig until June 2023. The respective contract also includes a release clause of €42 million which will reportedly be triggered in the summer of 2021. And being one of the most highly-rated defenders in all of Europe right now, it is no surprise that Solskjaer wants to bring him to Old Trafford.

Manchester United are looking to offload the likes of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo from their ranks in January, who do not appear to have much of a future at the club. This will in turn make some space to bring in new faces to the club.

Yet, given the number of teams that are willing to acquire the centre-back’s services, the competition will be a tough one for the Red Devils and the saga is going to be one to watch out for in the next summer transfer window.
