The manager was impressed with the Manchester United defender’s display in their 0-0 draw against Man City at the weekend.

After their disappointing elimination from the Champions League at the hands of RB Leipzig in midweek, Manchester United would have been desperate to avoid defeat against their cross-city rivals. And they managed to do just that, although the 0-0 result might not have been everybody’s cup of tea.

In a vacuum, a draw is not a bad result against one of the best teams in the league. And with a number of other teams also failing to win this weekend, it might turn out to be a great result for the Red Devils come the end of the season.

One of the biggest positives from the game was United’s defence. Considered as one of the team’s weakest areas, they did spectacularly to hold off one of the best attacking units in world football right now. And one man who particularly caught Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s eye on the day was Luke Shaw.

The manager had some special praise for his left-back after the game. As reported by Metro, he said:

"“I was worried a bit about Luke [Shaw] because he’s been out for a while, but I thought he was excellent, his performance was absolutely top.“If we were 2-0 up, you’d take him off for the last 20 minutes. But we needed to keep the shape.”"

Following the arrival of Alex Telles from FC Porto in the summer, Shaw is in a direct competition for the left-back spot. And while the Englishman has had his critics over the years, it is undeniable that he has done very well for himself this season.

So much so that he was even called up to England national team after a few years owing to his impressive performances. But unfortunately, he missed out after suffering a hamstring injury while playing for the Red Devils against Everton last month.

He is back in the fray now though and it does not look like he has missed a step despite just returning from an injury. And with both Telles and Shaw fit now, it will be interesting to see who the first choice left-back is under Solskjaer in the long run.

One thing is for sure, United have two high quality left-backs at the club right now. And that is a good headache to have for any manager.
