The Manchester United academy graduate has faced immense criticism from the German media after a terrible display in the Bundesliga last weekend.

On loan from Manchester United, Tahith Chong has made quite a roller-coaster start to his life for German side Werder Bremen, currently 13th on the Bundesliga table.

Having failed to break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans last season, the young Dutchman chose to join the German side for a season-long loan deal with no option for a permanent deal in the future. Therefore, the winger will be back at United at the end of the 2020-21 season.

It is thought that attaining a steady run of regular games was the main motivation behind Chong’s move away from Old Trafford. But the reality has not been that simple, with Bremen star Milot Rashica being always the first-pick for Florian Kohfeldt’s side.

Regular playing time had been a unfulfilled desire for the Manchester United graduate until Rashica sustained a serious injury about a week ago. Seeing the lack of replacements at his disposal, Kohfeldt handed Chong his third start in Bremen’s Bundesliga game against Stuttgart.

Having earned only 270 minutes of league football till date, the Dutch U23s star had the opportunity to nail down his place in the starting line-up. Instead, he put up a horror show, giving away a crucial penalty in what was a 2-1 loss for his team.

A host of German media outlets came out quickly to have their say on the 21-year-old’s performance.

More from Manchester United News

Bild claimed he was ‘too harmless upfront’ and ‘too impetuous (at the back)’ to sum up Chong’s performance. Another publication named DeichStube suggested that the player was ‘over-motivated’ and ‘unhappy’ through the course of the game.

The criticism of Chong went from bad to worse when Fehmarn rated the Dutchman’s performance a five out of ten but also pointed out that he had ‘obvious weaknesses’ in his defensive game.

Playing as a left-midfielder, Ching was designated to track his opponent down the wing while out of position — an aspect that has never been a strong point of his game. And hence, he has got a weak spot to work on if he wants to be playing regularly for his loan team.

In the absence of Rashica, Chong could expect a few more opportunities from the manager. However, if he is to keep his place for a longer period, the starlet will have to provide a consistent run of eye-catching performances from here on.
