Manchester United have reportedly offered the defender a new contract despite him not featuring much for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer let Diogo Dalot leave for a season-long loan for AC Milan. Considering all feasible circumstances, he was thought to have made that decision keeping the Manchester United youngster’s development in mind.

The manager believed that he had enough artillery in his ranks to cover Aaron Wan-Bissaka, his number one pick for the right-back spot. All he had though was Timothy Fosu-Mensah, the 22-year-old Dutchman who had barely been involved in club actions since returning from his injury-ravaged loan spell with Fulham.

Signed from the famed Ajax academy back in 2014, Fosu-Mensah made his senior debut as a 55th-minute substitute against Arsenal in 2016. Before joining Crystal Palace on loan in 2017, the compatriot of United’s new signing Donny van de Beek penned a long-term contract extension until June 2020 with an option for a further year.

United went on to trigger that additional one-year option last April, extending his stay at the club until June 2021.

As a report from Manchester Evening News explains, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer loves the attitude in training from the Dutchman and the work he has done as the second fiddle to Aaron Wan-Bissaka. In the 2019-20 season, he has managed two appearances in all competitions.

Therefore, the United management have already put a new contract on the table of the Dutch prodigy. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether he will put pen to paper or choose to ply his trade somewhere else.

Manchester United are going to face a formidable run of games both in the Premier League and in the Champions League. The Red Devils will be up against the likes of PSG, Manchester City and RB Leipzig over the next couple of weeks.

Should injuries or extreme fatigue, caused by the frantic fixture-list, hit United’s right-back spot and push Aaron Wan-Bissaka to the bench or the sidelines, Fosu-Mensah should be ready to fill the Englishman’s boots.
