Manchester United have been linked with a big-money move for the player for a while now and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now spoken about it.

Over the duration of the recent transfer window, all the talk in the media and the papers was about Manchester United and their pursuit of Jadon Sancho. Additionally though, the club were also strongly linked with a move for RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.

The Frenchman’s rise through the ranks has been rapid, as this article from First Time Finish reveals. During that time, he also rejected advances from the Red Devils early in his career because the club failed to meet some of his personal demands.

Now, he will have a chance to show the Premier League giants what they’ve been missing as they face off tonight in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

The 22-year old signed a new deal with Leipzig up to 2023 with a new release clause which does not become active until next summer. The reported value of the clause is about €42million. This represents a bargain value for a defender who is expected to be one of the best in the coming years.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked about Upamecano in the pre-match press conference and the Norwegian addressed the rumours around the player himself as reported by The Sun:

"“There’s always rumours and speculation about good players for Manchester United, I’ve always tried to respect they are players for other teams and don’t want to comment on every player we are linked to.“But since he’s playing against us tomorrow, I know he’s a very good player and we can see him close up tomorrow.”"

It will certainly be a very intense battle between Upamecano and United’s pacy forwards in Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. The highly experienced Edinson Cavani may expect to be involved during the game as well. After a very well-earned victory against Paris Saint-Germain on Matchday 1, Ole and his boys will be hoping to carry on in the same vein of form.

And Red Devils fans will also get a good look at a man who could be turning out in their jersey this time next year.
