Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shed light on why the Manchester United star has not featured much since moving to Old Trafford in the summer.

We know that the pressure is always high at a club like Manchester United to produce results. And a bad patch of form could end up costing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job as manager. But even then you would expect him to give his big summer signing more opportunities than Donny van de Beek has received since joining the Premier League giants

It is arguable that the Dutchman was the club’s marquee signing of the summer. While Edinson Cavani was also a big name who came through the door, he is a short-term fix up front. Van de Beek is expected to be a part of this team for years to come.

Solskjaer has called for some patience though as he has assured the fans that the midfielder will get his chances soon enough and is a important part of his plans for the season. As reported by the Express, he said:

"“When players come into a new team, a new league it’s always going to be a time that he adapts.“When Donny has played, he’s played really well. It says a lot about our depth of quality in the squad that we don’t have to use him every game. It also says everything about our ambitions.“Donny is going to play a big big part this year. I know at the moment the topic is Donny van de Beek.“It’s nice for some players and commentators to have a little go, but you have to know that you don’t have to start the first three games to be a very important player in the squad. He’s going to be important, don’t worry about that.”"

Van de Beek is a huge talent and will get his chances in time. But the truth of the matter is that the midfield is packed at the moment and opportunities are hard to come by for any player. So much so that even Paul Pogba has found himself on the bench for the past few weeks now.

A move to a diamond formation could be the answer to those problems though. As things stand, United do not have a genuine world-class right winger in their ranks. And it would not be the worst idea to bring more midfielders into their line up as a result instead of trying to shoehorn players to play on the wing.

The problem with that though is that it will see two of Rashford, Martial, Cavani and Greenwood miss as a result. And then, Solskjaer will be back to square one.
