Michael Owen has made an exciting claim about new Manchester United signing Edinson Cavani and his future at Old Trafford.

The former PSG striker joined Manchester United this summer on a free transfer, along with three other deadline signings. The 33-year-old Uruguayan was not included in the playing XI from day one, as he had to remain in quarantine after he arrived from France this month. It was expected that Cavani would make his debut against his former team in the Champions League but did not end up featuring.

It was the match against Chelsea where he made his debut in the second half and was almost successful in scoring an outstanding goal with his first touch of the ball. Along with Pogba, Cavani was able to change the momentum of the game after coming on. He was close to scoring again when Thiago Silva, his former teammate denied his attempt with an excellent tackle.

Although the game against Chelsea ended in a 0-0 draw, former United star Michael Owen saw some great potential in the new line-up built around Edinson Cavani and said that the Uruguayan will be a big hit if he is provided with the right service.

According to the Metro, these were Owen’s thoughts on Cavani:

"“I love this guy’s movement, he’s my type of striker.“I’ve always said half a yard at the near post is better than two or three yards at the back post because invariably the ball doesn’t get there.“And if it does, defenders turn, spin and close you down.“The timing of his run, he’s on his toes, Thiago played alongside him at Paris-Saint-German, he knows exactly how he does it, when he tries to time it, you could see that, talk about knowing your players, great defending.“Normally, against most defenders he might have got there in front, nicked it and he would’ve have got a block in.“We only saw a brief cameo but I’ve seen him for years and years and always thought he’s one of the best movers in the game in terms of those little darting runs, he loves nipping in front of defenders.“I think he’s going to score a few. ‘As long as United have pressure on the opponents. They get crosses in. He’s very much an 18-yard box type of striker that makes darting runs.”"

It is still early to make any kind of judgement as Cavani has only played a single game for United. These assumptions were also made at the time of Alexis Sanchez and we already know how that turned out. But the Uruguayan’s performance against Chelsea might be a sign of things to come for the Red Devils.

For a long time, nobody has quite managed to fill the number 7 shirt left behind by Cristiano Ronaldo. United fans will be hoping that the curse is finally lifted and Edinson Cavani is the man to finally make the legendary shirt his own. He certainly has the pedigree to do so. Let’s just see if he can cut it in the Premier League.

On the other hand, the biggest challenge for Solskjaer would be to provide minutes to Cavani while also making sure that it does not hinder the development of youngsters like Mason Greenwood.
