Manchester United fans should be worried by Alan Shearer’s prediction for the Red Devils’ Premier League season following a terrible start.

It is safe to say that Manchester United would not have gone into the season expecting to make the start that they have. Following the arrival of Bruno Fernandes in January, the club looked like a formidable unit, one capable of competing for the title with a few more good signings.

This season though, it has looked like all that work has been undone and we are back to square one. Contrary to last season’s 4-0 win over Chelsea on opening day, this time around the Red Devils lost 3-1 at home at the hands of Crystal Palace.

That was followed by an equally suspect performance away at Brighton and Hove Albion, where they managed to come out with a 3-2 win in controversial fashion in a game where the hosts hit the woodwork five times!

Things completely fell apart last week though as Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur team handed the Red Devils a 6-1 drubbing at Old Trafford. Some thing that people could not probably imagine a month back.

Before the season a number of Manchester United fans might have had title aspirations. But now, even finishing in the top four is looking like a tough task. Or at least, that is what Alan Shearer believes.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the Premier League legend said:

"“I wasn’t expecting them to challenge for the title anyway. I thought they would challenge for a top-four spot, but at the moment they look as if they’re going backwards.“If you look at the three league games they’ve played, the first game against Crystal Palace they were hopeless.“The second game at Brighton, yes they showed some character to get back into the game but they also got away with it because Brighton hit the woodwork five times.“The third game against Tottenham, you could use whatever word you wanted and they couldn’t argue with it because it was there for everyone to see.“And it wasn’t as if it was just because they had a man sent off; it was a shambles with 11 men as well. It was really poor.”"

To be very honest, the top four race is going to be tighter than ever this season. Liverpool and Manchester City are clearly the two best teams in the league right now, although Pep Guardiola’s side seem to have lost their shine a bit as well.

Chelsea are just coming out of a spectacularly ambitious transfer window where they brought in the likes of Havertz, Werner, Ziyech, Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy. Everton look stronger than they have in years. Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur seem reborn again. And Leicester City look like they are going to make a run for the top four once again after narrowly missing out last season.

Some fans will blame the lack of ambition shown in the transfer market for these performances. Others will blame either the manager or the players. One thing is clear though, things need to improve quick or Solskjaer is gonna be shown the exit door.
