Manchester United are set to battle their Premier League rivals for the highly-rated manager as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future at the club appears uncertain.

The sad reality of modern football is that the big clubs demand immediate. Gone are the days when managers would be given years before they were expected to produce results. If Sir Alex Ferguson arrived at Manchester United today, would he be given four years time before winning his first trophy at the club? Probably not.

As a result, do not be surprised to see the club sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if the results do not improve soon. The Red Devils lost their opening game of the season when Crystal Palace walked out with a 3-1 victory from Old Trafford. Then they somehow managed to escape with a win from Brighton and Home Albion despite putting in a terrible performance and had to ride their luck to the three points.

The 6-1 thumping at home at the hands of Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur has turned that early season stumble into a crisis as the pressure mounts on Solskjaer. And if reports are to be believed then it appears that Ed Woodward is ready to sack the Norwegian if the results don’t improve soon. In case that ends up happening, Mauricio Pochettino appears to be the man who the Red Devils want.

It is not going to be easy though as The Mirror reports that crosstown rivals Manchester City are also keen on the Argentine. Pep Guardiola’s contract with the club expires at the end of the season and at this point of time, the manager has shown no sign of wanting to extend his stay. And while that can change over the next few months, Pochettino appears to be on top of their wishlist in case Pep departs.

And while it is a longshot, if it comes down to the two Manchester clubs, it will be interesting to see which team Pochettino picks.
