Manchester United are running on a thin ice cube that gets thinner with each passing day.

Over the years, everything has gone through a drastic evolution, society has developed with the touch of industrialization and the advancement in science, people existing in that society have improved their ways of living, people playing or interested in the beautiful yet merciless game of football have seen the emergence of various new tactics, the rise of new stars and the fall of the known ones have not gone unnoticed either. What has remained constant is the impact of a phone call from the Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho.

His cajoling words to convince a transfer target and influence a transfer has been one of the best-known tricks that have helped the gaffer persuade countless player across his glittering managerial career. And even after losing his fame to some extent, as many of us believe, in recent times, the Tottenham Hotspur boss has not lost the aura he possesses over others — and unsurprisingly, he has done it again.

Manchester United were very passively monitoring the deal for Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon, who spent his last season on loan with Sevilla and helped them win the UEFA Europa League at the latter stage of the season, beating Man United in the semi-final stage.

As a result of having two reputed left-backs in Marcelo and Ferland Mendy already in the roster, Real Madrid decided to let Sergio Reguilon go on a permanent transfer. However, their only demands were that the Reguilon’s contract would contain a buy-back clause and a first-refusal clause — the reasons that forced United to just monitor the deal steadily for weeks without making any adequate progression.

There were also the claims of United wanting to pay only €25 million for the Spanish national team, with Real Madrid determined to get €30 million. In the meantime, Mourinho rolled up his sleeves and dialled the number to have a direct conversation with the player.

And the rest is the history — Spurs were ready to pay Madrid’s asking price for their prodigy and were keen to accept all the clauses Los Blancos wanted to insert while losing an enthralling talent like Sergio Reguilon at the hands of a foreign club. Mourinho came up as the winner yet again, as Manchester United, on the other hand, felt the backlash for acting as an inept consortium.

As any philosopher would say, “those were the past incidents.” And, for Manchester United, the focus should now be on the future of the club, as their manager, namely Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has been a strong proclaimer of his long-term vision.

With less than three weeks left in the summer transfer market, Manchester United are reportedly exploring every possibility to rectify the situation and sign at least two more players. One might be a left-back, an alternative to Sergio Reguilo, as per the reports suggest.

The story from the Portuguese outlet A Bola (via Sportwitness) exemplifies that the breakdown of Reguilon deal has left Manchester United red-faced and a door ‘wide open’ for Alex Telles, 27, to come in. Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, Porto have been struggling a lot financially, meaning they would need to offload a number of their star members — one of them is Alex Telles.

The player’s agent, Pini Zahavi, has been understandably in talks with the Mancunian club. Telles is supposedly available for €20 million, owing to the fact that his contract with the Portuguese club set to expire in the next summer.

Alex Telles could actually be a decent addition and the only route to extinguish the fire that has been flourishing inside the Manchester United fanbase due to the lack of strengthening of the squad ahead of their Premeir League curtain-raiser against Crystal Palace next Saturday.

Do you think Manchester United will make a move for Telles?
