Manchester United could land a major coup.

The last decade has been a dreadful nightmare for every Manchester United fan. The rise of the club’s noisy neighbours from the ashes and the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and the subsequent barren era has left Old Trafford in a perpetual state of misery.

Couple that with Liverpool finally lifting the long coveted Premier League title this summer, it is an era which the club will not look back on with great pride. However, things are certainly changing, albeit slowly.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has marshalled an impressive response and the Norwegian is gradually moulding a United squad that could soon be prepared to challenge at the pinnacle of English and European football once more.

More from Red Devil Armada

The transfer saga which has consumed most Red Devils supporters is the perpetual back and forth between Dortmund and United over Jadon Sancho.

Signing a defender has gone under the radar at Old Trafford, however the position could be even more pressing than Sancho.

While, the Red Devils’ front three has been in stellar form since the re-start with Mason Greenwood establishing himself as a pivotal figure in United’s resurgence, the same cannot be said for the defence.

United’s defensive unit still lack a cohesive edge. Harry Maguire has been astute but he can still be prone to make an error and it is clear he needs the right partner.

United need a player in the same ilk as Virgil Van Dijk. Someone who is one of the best in the role and Kalidou Koulibaly could be the perfect candidate.

The Senegalese centre-back has been a rumoured favourite of Pep Guardiola with the Spaniard desperate to bring him to the Etihad, however it seems like the Man City might have given up on their pursuit.

The latest report by the Sunday Mirror via the Daily Express claims City will not make an approach for Kalidou Koulibaly.

That news could give the initiative to United in order to make their move. The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the Senegal centre-back and Napoli look keen to sell.

Koulibaly’s bulky physique and blistering pace would perfectly complement Harry Maguire at the back for the Red Devils and with a strong defence, Solskjaer’s team could very well be looking at challenging City and Liverpool next season.

If Man United will miss on Sancho, investing that money in Kalidou Koulibaly would make the most sense.
