It has been a quiet summer transfer window so far for Manchester United.

Often touted as one the next big things for Manchester United, Tahith Chong have had endured a relatively topsy-turvy campaign under the supervision of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the latter’s first full season as United’s head coach.

Joining the Mancunian club from Eredivisie (Dutch League) side Feyenoord in the year 2016 after snubbing Chelsea, who were equally interested in the youngster, having impressed by the overwhelming displays during his early days at the Dutch academy, Chong directly got a starting place for United U18 side, scoring his first goal for the youth side in the 2016–17 FA Youth Cup.

A cruciate ligament injury saw him being sidelined for around 10 months. His return from the aforementioned injury provided him with a place in United’s Under-23 side. Chong later became the captain of the side, having received the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year in May 2018.

Opportunities started coming thick and fast for the Dutchman. He was called up for Manchester United’s first-team pre-season tour in the United States in July 2018. Despite showcasing glimpses of tricks and flicks in United’s senior shirt, he had to wait almost three more months to get his first competitive debut as United’s senior professional.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having replaced Jose Mourinho at United’s throne, chose to hand Chong his debut in the FA Cup tie against Reading, substituting Juan Mata for the starlet at the 62nd-minute of the game that they went on to win 2-0.

Since then, it has been all about him getting more chances and playing more games in United’s youth ranks than with the seniors — and Chong’s numbers are the visible evidence of that. In the 2019-20 campaign, he has made 22 appearances in total across all competitions — though, when we take a closer look on that list, we find only three Premier League appearances under his name which all came as a substitute.

There were some dark clouds over his future in the January transfer window when was heavily linked with a move to Italian Serie A side Inter Milan. However, those rumours are no more relevant as Chong put pen to paper, tying his future by signing a long-term contract that will keep him at the club until June 2022.

The 20-year-old was given a chance to flourish in United’s last home game at Old Trafford against LASK Linz — certainly as a substitute but this time for left-back Brandon Williams. Even though he was unable to produce a goal or an assist on that night, his performance — that lasted for less than 25 minutes — went on to prove again that there is a potential superstar within Tahith Chong.

Impressed fans turned on to Twitter to applaud the Dutchman’s cameo, sending hundreds of thousands of tweets appreciating the youngsters’ efforts on the pitch and making the surname “Chong” a trending topic on the social media platform.

That being said, he might have made his last run on the green turf of Old Trafford, with Chong possible closing towards a loan move to Germany this summer. Claiming that Chong needs some regular game-time under his belt, the aspiring star’s agent Erkan Alkan said, “Tahith wants to go to the Bundesliga.”

And now, the current sporting director of Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, Frank Baumann, has come under the spotlight after reaffirming Tahith Chong’s possible move to Bremen, confirming,

"“He is a player who is interesting for us, no question about it.“We need a player like him in the position he plays. We are in good talks with Manchester United, but there are several details to be agreed on.“I like to keep a low profile when it comes to something like this, but when the player’s advisor communicates so aggressively, there is no point in denying our interest.”"

As per the reports in Germany, Bremen might sign Chong on a two-year loan contract without any option to buy permanently in the deal. Solskjaer has already intended that the front three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood have sealed the front places.

And with a potential signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, Chong might have to look elsewhere to obtain regular playing time. In recent history, players have chosen a move to Germany to develop their game. And it could prove to be beneficial for Chong as well.
