The Manchester United goalkeeper faces an uncertain future.

There is no bigger plight in football than that of the goalkeeper. The position is that of a martyr and a mercenary. It is filled to the brim with scrutiny and one mistake is enough to have a detrimental impact on a players’ psyche. Therefore to be a goalkeeper, one must have ample mental strength and the courage of a lion. Manchester United’s David de Gea will know this.

The Spaniard’s mental fortitude has been one of his biggest assets until an abysmal World Cup in 2018 seemed to mar his confidence.

Ever since his return to Old Trafford from that ill-fortuned tournament, David de Gea has not been the same. The goalkeeper has looked wilted in between the sticks and has struggled to keep attacks at bay.

More from Red Devil Armada

His hands have not been firm like they were before, sometimes they’ve juddered upon the approach of the ball and have allowed the flying object to penetrate through them time and time again.

Patience is rare in football, but for a player who has served for almost a decade at Old Trafford, there has been ample support directed towards de Gea. The fans and Solskjaer have kept faith in the United goalkeeper despite one blunder after another.

Unfortunately, with the Red Devils pressed to return to the pinnacle of English football, they cannot afford David de Gea to hold them down for much longer however.

And according to Mundo Deportivo via the Daily Express behind the scenes United are growing unhappy with de Gea despite words of reassurance from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the press. The report goes as far as to claim that the Red Devils have even held discussions about potential goalkeeper candidates to sign ahead of the summer transfer window.

If Mundo Deportivo is to be believed, it is certainly an indicator that if David de Gea’s form continues to plummet, United will not sit around for much longer.

The growing discontent about the Spaniard’s form is understandable. The disappointment is made even worse by the fact that only a few years prior, David de Gea was considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

His sturdy hands were a staunch wall in between the sticks. One will hope that somehow David de Gea finds a way out of the abyss and manages to rekindle his previous form.
