Manchester United will presumably offload a few burdens this summer.

If one needs to know the perfect definition of the phrase — Jekyll and Hyde, there possibly would not be a better illustration than Manchester United’s 2019-20 campaign.

For the Red Devils, it has been one of those seasons where a fan endures almost everything football could offer in the span of eight months — thrilling outcomes, unprecedented scenarios, underwhelming displays, late-winners, new aspirations, and finally happiness.

If we break the current season of Manchester United into two parts — pre-Bruno Fernandes and post-Bruno Fernandes, it undoubtedly has been the latter part where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have seen the massive expansion of their overall development.

However, it is understood that works still need to be done in different areas over the course of the next few months. And this time, Ole Gunnar Solkjaer is expected to be at the charge of an ongoing rejuvenation, sitting at the focal point of all the transfer talks.

A massive part of the undone tasks includes the exclusion of deadwoods and unwanted prodigies, especially who are currently on loan from the red side of Manchester. The purpose would be to cut the extra wages off the bill and pocket some required transfer fees amidst the financial conundrum caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

One of the unwanted players on that list includes the name of Chris Smalling, a 30-year-old centre-back, who joined AS Roma on a season-long loan from the Mancunian club last summer. Since moving to the capital of Italy, the English international has showcased decent resilience while protecting the defence, making 25 appearances in Serie A this term.

Reports surrounding the Italian club have already made it clear that Roma would love to sign Smalling on a permanent basis, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, on the other hand, has no intention to keep Smalling under his ranks, suggesting, “I’d rather have a hole in the squad than an a*****e”.

However, both clubs are yet to materialise the final talks regarding the deal. According to reputed Italian transfer guru, Gianluca Di Marzio, both Roma and Manchester United are in talks to make the aforementioned deal permanent.

The report suggests the Italian side has made an offer of €3 million to extend Smalling’s loan-spell to another year, with an option to buy him for €14-15 million on the permanent basis following the expiration of the loan deal.

Manchester United are believed to be unhappy about the valuation of the permanent deal as they are hoping for an improved bid for the English defender. Furthermore, it is not decided yet whether Smalling will play beyond the end of the 2019-20 Serie A campaign and participate in the remaining Europa League matches for the Giallorossi.

Roma boss Paulo Fonseca delivered his stance on this matter, saying,

"“We are working towards keeping Chris here at the club and we are hopeful that he can be available for the Europa League “"

Talks are reportedly underway between the two clubs but are understandably far from reaching the completion. It would be interesting to see how the story pans out in the upcoming weeks.
