Manchester United are linked with an outrageous move.

He runs through thickets of defenders mesmerising them in the process. His elegant gait and marauding runs are hard to follow for the naked human eye. He weaves past players in rapid motions, drifting through the opposition as if they were static cones. He is one of a kind. An enigma. A special breed. A once in a lifetime talent. Manchester United fans will know of his brilliance all too well. They have witnessed Lionel Messi‘s ethereal ability first hand in some rather bleak Champions League final encounters for the club.

The Argentinian defender tore the Red Devils defence to shreds during his respective outings against a United partnership which is widely regarded as one of the best in the club’s history and included Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

For over a decade, Lionel Messi has enjoyed a shared hegemony in world football with former United favourite Cristiano Ronaldo. The pair of them have received a plethora of Ballon D’or awards and have dominated the best competitions in world football. Their level of superiority has been unprecedented and unrivalled in the history of the game.

Yet in the past few seasons, Lionel Messi’s form has dwindled somewhat. Of course he is always measured up to his humanely unattainable past which makes criticism of his form rather harsh. However, Messi has failed to conjure up consistent performances over the past couple of years.

Much of the reason for that has been down to Barcelona’s dwindling in quality with the Catalan outfit having lost the sharpness and the depth of talent in their squad.

And according to recent reports, Lionel Messi is somewhat frustrated with the club’s future vision which has led to a breakdown in negotiations over his new contract that expires next summer.

That has alerted some of Europe’s elite clubs, and according to Argentinian outlet VarskySports via the Daily Express Man United alongside Paris Saint Germain are one of the clubs who could be looking to make a move for Lionel Messi and exploit his current contract situation.

The rumour should be taken with a pinch of salt. Lionel Messi has been rumoured with moves away from Barcelona over the years but he has always remained routed at his boyhood club. At 33 years of age he no doubt still has a few years left at the top of his game, however for the extortionate fee Barcelona would demand for Messi’s services it is unlikely the Red Devils would make a move for the Barcelona star.
