Five underrated players Manchester United should sign in the summer
By Bence Bocsak
3. Kalvin Phillips
Position: Central Defensive Midfielder
Age: 24
In the Championship one player stands head and shoulders above the rest. Kalvin Phillips leaves pundits and experts drooling week after week with his exemplary performances.
It is only a matter of time until he makes the step-up to the Premier League but already there are calls for him to earn an England call up.
The calls might be shocking for the majority who are unfamiliar with his talent, but those few who watch Kalvin Phillips regularly will understand why the midfielder is held in such high regard.
A product of Leeds United’s academy, Phillips has blossomed since the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa at the club.
The Argentinian has moulded the 24 year old into an excellent all-round midfielder. What is really impressive about Phillips is his reading of the game and the way he can break down attacks with ease.
United are certainly in need of a player of his quality and Phillips could come on the relatively cheap side with his value purported around £20 million. That is a steal considering he has the potential to be the Premier League’s next N’golo Kante.
4. Chris Smalling
Position: Centre Back
Age: 30
Yes technically Chris Smalling is only on loan at AS Roma, however it seems increasingly likely that the English defender will depart Old Trafford in the summer.
This however would be a huge mistake.
Chris Smalling is incredibly underrated and has been one of the best performing centre-backs in the Serie A this season.
His performances have earned him rave reviews and Roma are desperate to retain him next season.
However with United yet to find an ideal partner for Harry Maguire perhaps Chris Smalling could be the man to do it.
