Manchester United have identified a perfect and much cheaper alternative option to target over Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer transfer window.
The Manchester United defence saw the biggest amount of investment in the summer with hefty fees splashed out for Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Yet that major investment is yet to reap the rewards.
United’s defence has undoubtedly been one of their weak spots during this season so far. Both Maguire and Wan-Bissaka have taken their time to settle at Old Trafford and their uneasiness has led to some shaky defending.
It is clear the Red Devils are in need of another figure to solidify their backline.

Napoli and Senegal centre back Kalidou Koulibaly could be the perfect option. The 28 year old has amassed a plethora of experience in some of Europe’s elite leagues and has established himself as one of the best centre backs in the world. Some even consider him to be on par with Virgil Van Dijk.
It is easy to see why, Kalidou Koulibaly has a commanding presence and his bulky figure and immense power makes him an impenetrable wall at the heart of Napoli’s defence.
However recently the Red Devils were dealt a major blow in their pursuit of Kalidou Koulibaly with the Italian side demanding a hefty £127 million for his services. Having already invested heavily into the club’s defence, United will be reluctant to part with such a huge fee for another defender.
And it seems they may have found the perfect alternative to sign instead of Kalidou Koulibaly. Marash Kumbulla has been hugely impressive in the Serie A this season and has been one of Hellas Verona’s standout performers. According to Italian outlet Tuttosport via Manchester Evening News United are interested in the young defender and could bring him to Old Trafford in the summer.
The report by the Italian outlet claims that Marash Kumbulla’s asking price would be ‘less than £20 million’ which is a much more favourable price for the Red Devils.
Marash Kumbulla is also a lot younger at 20 years of age with plenty of time to develop. In the long term he could be the better signing for the club.
What do you think, who should Manchester United sign in defence?
