According to reports the Manchester United boss could be on the brink of finally completing his first January transfer window signing within days.

When the Carabao Cup semi-final tie against Manchester City concluded, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have inevitably sat down in the dressing room and let out a deep sigh. Many thoughts must have been racing around in his mind. The game was a blur, filled and blotted by moments of hopelessness by the Manchester United XI.

The questions coiling around in Solskjaer’s brain must have been poignant and ominous. Existential even. Despite the Norwegian’s best efforts Manchester United look far from the side one expects them to be.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure at Old Trafford as manager has been hapless. He has endured too many injury crisis’ and has failed to make the team gel.

More pivotally, without the club’s two best midfielders in Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, Solskjaer’s midfield looks spineless. It is that weakness which Guardiola exploited against the Red Devils midweek and which will be exploited by many others too if it is not resolved.

Solskjaer needs reinforcements fast and immediately.

The necessity could not have come at a better time with the January transfer window upon us.

And it seems Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is closing in on his first signing of the window. According to the Daily Express United could ‘finally’ get their long coveted target in Sporting Lisbon’s captain and midfielder Bruno Fernandes. Meanwhile the Daily Star claims that the Red Devils are ‘in advanced talks’ with the player and are ‘confident’ of completing a deal.

Bruno Fernandes is a versatile attacking midfielder who can play both in the central midfield role or a little bit further up the pitch. His statistics in Portugal for Sporting have been incredible over the last couple of years. Bruno Fernandes has already scored 13 goals and made 13 assists this season in just 23 games. Meanwhile last season he scored 32 goals and assisted 18 in 54 games.

Those are the numbers and the attacking edge which Manchester United are in desperate need of. If reports are to be believed Bruno Fernandes could be a hugely exciting signing. However one man will not fix the entire midfield and the club should consider other targets too.
