The Manchester United boss could be on the brink of achieving something special in the transfer market for the Red Devils.
From Paul Pogba to Juventus, to Robert Lewandowski to Bayern Munich and James Milner to Liverpool. Over the last decade some of the world’s top clubs have picked up huge bargains on a free transfer after those star players’ contracts had expired. When Paul Pogba moved to Juventus in 2012 from Manchester United, the Red Devils were on the receiving end of the misery, however in 2020 with the new dawn of the decade it seems things will be changing for the club.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to make some nifty business at Manchester United in order to be able to compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City and for that the Norwegian boss needs all the ammunition he can get.
Yet having spent a lot of money in the summer, his budget might be sparse come January especially since those signings have been far from exceptional since their arrival at Old Trafford. That means the Manchester United board will be reluctant to give Solskjaer a hefty budget.
It is why it seems the Norwegian manager has set his sights on a potential free signing in Dries Mertens of Napoli. The sensational Belgian midfielder is out of contract in the summer and his future remains uncertain at Napoli. The Italian side are going through a period of instability having sacked their manager Carlo Ancelotti and it is what United could potentially capitalise on by making an approach for Dries Mertens. According the Daily Mail, United have entered ‘the race’ to sign the Napoli attacker.
Mertens is a nifty attacker with quick feet and a great burst of pace. He can play both out wide and in a more central role as well as a false number nine. Despite his diminutive figure he is hard to knock off the ball and he can be real nuisance to defenders.
Dries Mertens could be the perfect Manchester United signing and a huge coup on a free transfer.
What do you think would Dries Mertens be a good signing by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer?
