VIDEO: Manchester United legend calls club “SHAMBLES” in fierce rant!
By Ollie Slack
Manchester United legend Gary Neville labelled his former club a “shambles” on Sky Sports’ coverage of Manchester City versus Leicester City on Monday Night Football this week, in an 11-minute rant.
The former United right-back has never been shy of continually showing his love for the club, ever since he retired in 2011. However, even for Gary’s standards, this rant was one like no other.
He started by suggesting a way forward for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United this summer. In what he described as a “cleanse” of the dressing room, Neville clearly feels there are many at the club, and not just the players, whose time is up at Old Trafford.
"“There is a two-stage job for Manchester United now. The first thing they have to do is cleanse the club from top to bottom. They should put a new football department in charge who are the best in class football operators.“Underneath that put the right recruitment people, the right technical people and then the manager and coach will find it a lot easier. Then you get the right spirit and the right people in the dressing room.“From that point, you might get into the top four and develop a team that the fans like again. That may take two or three years, you can then go on and go for the title. This is a five-year project.”"
Neville’s thoughts on Ed Woodward
Neville turned his attention to the Manchester United executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward. Woodward originally was tasked with improving the club’s commercial and media operations in 2007 and worked his way up the hierarchy to be appointed David Gill’s successor in 2013, taking on the CEO.
"“Ed Woodward has had seven years at this, so I think he’s had his chance at running the football side of the club. Now you have to think, ‘right ok, that two-person structure’s not worked for the first three, four years, it’s now a situation where you’ve got to bring a different structure in.’ And they need to bring in the best in class and step aside.“If you’ve not delivered on the pitch for five, six, seven years, there becomes a point where it can’t just keep being the coach. There’s got to be people above that have to step aside and move into a different role.”"
United’s old skipper continued to lambast the club for their decision-making since the great Sir Alex left some six years ago. He also started to hint at some of his own views on how the club should move forward this summer, but, first revealed the number of different recruitment staff United still have on the books.
"“There is a cultural problem at the football club. The decisions are bad, the choices are poor. Who’s signing the players this summer? I haven’t got a clue at Manchester United.“They’ve still got Sir Alex’s chief scout, they’ve still got Louis Van Gaal’s scout. they’ve still got David Moyes’ chief football operator. You’ve got head coach who will have an opinion, [and the] CEO will have an opinion, who’s in charge?”"
Neville’s new direction
United fans across the globe are desperate to see their club back amongst the big time, competing for every trophy once again. Neville is no different. He is a man who has been inside a football club at varying levels.
Not only has he played the game at the highest level for the Red Devils and England, but he managed Valencia for a short while and is the co-owner of Salford City in the National League.
With his very own eyes, he has seen what makes a football club tick and what doesn’t. Clearly, his view is that the current structure at Manchester United is not working and a needs to change.
"“I’m not talking about a director of football. I’m talking about a new direction and a strategy that means the club can actually move forward in the next three or four years. It’s beyond a director of football or a coach.”"
Host David Jones then asked Neville a great final question which was met by an even better answer. Jones pondered, “What is the best you can hope for Manchester United next season?” It could have been very easy for Neville to turn round and quickly whip up a cheap answer such as winning the Premier League title. But he’s realistic.
With no hesitation, Neville said:
"“Have 11 players on that pitch who want to play for the club, who want to be there, who run to the last-minute of every single match. There are definitely five or six people in that dressing room who look to me at the moment like they don’t want to be there always.”"
You can tell it hurts him. As a former player, previous captain and fan of Manchester United, Gary Neville is certainly not enjoying watching this team at the moment. But he so wants too.
Neville wants Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to manage the club with a dressing room full of players who worked as hard, enjoyed it as much but most importantly, respected the badge just as much as the pair of them did when they played.
