Ex-Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho gives details on behind-the-scenes issues at Old Trafford leading up to his sacking in December.
Jose Mourinho made an appearance on BeIN Sports as a pundit a month after being sacked from Manchester United.
The Portuguese defended his side’s woes this season, insisting that fans and pundits did not know what was “going on behind the scenes”.
In his first season at the club, United finished in 6th place in the Premier League, but they did win the League Cup and more importantly the Europa League – which got them back into the Champions League.
In his follow-up season, the Red Devils managed to finish 2nd – their highest finish since the final season of Sir Alex Ferguson – but did not win any trophies.
Things turned sour this season, as the ex-manager left his cub in 6th place in the league after five losses and a goal difference of just zero.
United were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup prematurely after losing out on penalties to Frank Lampard’s Derby County at Old Trafford.
However, Mourinho did manage to get his team into the last 16 of the Champions League after a group stage run which included an impressive 2-1 away win over Juventus.
Nevertheless, after losing 3-1 to Liverpool at Anfield in the league, the board felt it was the right time for him to move on, and promptly sacked the three-time Premier League winner.
Sitting down with BeIN Sports, Mourinho had this to say about his time at Manchester United:
"“I also think that sometimes we comment what we see but we don’t know what is behind the scenes. And that influences what we see. And that is a fundamental thing.“If I tell you for example that I consider one of the best jobs of my career [was] to finish second with Manchester United in the Premier League, you say this guy is crazy, he won 25 titles and is saying finishing [in] second position was one of his best achievements in football.“I keep saying this. Because people don’t know what is going on behind the scenes and sometimes we, on this side of the cameras, analyse things with a different perspective.“And also why I accept to be here and accept in the next period where I suppose not be working immediately is also to know the new football better and to know the new football better is to understand what is behind the cameras. Very interesting for me.” [MEN]"
The 55-year-old was hesitant to go into exactly what had occurred behind the scenes, but it seems that irreparable damage had been done to his relationship with the board and his players, making his sacking inevitable.
Mourinho was replaced by ex-United forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Since taking over, Solskjaer has won all six of his games, including Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town, Bournemouth, Newcastle United, Reading and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, Manchester United remain in 6th place in the Premier League table.
