SUGGESTED STARTING XI: Manchester United travel to Wembley to take on Spurs

Manchester United make their 53rd visit to the national stadium this afternoon when they take on Spurs. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping to make history and become the first manager of the club to win their first six games in charge. But how many changes to his team will he make? Here’s what our expert writers suggest.

Ali Akbar

Although Diogo Dalot is a natural full-back and can cross with his right foot, he just can’t seem to handle the pressure defensively, so Ashley Young would be a more sensible choice at right-back.

The midfield of Fred, Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay was abysmal against Reading, so none of three will be keeping their place against Tottenham. Instead, Solskjaer will revert back to the midfield three that has worked so well for him this season.

Although Romelu Lukaku is in fine goalscoring form at the moment and Alexis Sanchez likewise in terms of assists, the fluid front three of Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have played better football than any other we’ve tried this season. The Belgian and the Chilean will probably be left on the bench.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn’t have a lot of choices when it comes to picking United’s back four, therefore I agree with Ali. Dalot is the only other fit option that misses out.

Chris Smalling wasn’t spotted by photographers when the squad departed for Wembley. A big blow for the Norwegian who would have wanted to get him back alongside Lindelof, the best centre-back pairing at the club, for such an important match.

The midfield three didn’t gel at all against Reading, I personally don’t think either of Fred, Pereira or McTominay have found their strongest positions at the club yet.

Therefore, it’s a no brainer that a midfield three who certainly have gelled since Solskjaer’s arrival: Herrera, Matic and Pogba, all return.

The news that Pogba was fit is massive for the team. In games against the top six of the past, when the Frenchman hasn’t been ready to play, United have looked devoid of confidence or ideas. And that’s not to say they are a one-man team, however, if Solskjaer wants to play on the counter-attack against the big sides with pace and power, Pogba certainly is an important cog in the machine.

And once again I agree with Ali regarding the front three. It was great to see Alexis and Lukaku link up well and show signs of progression against Reading, but Lingard, Rashford and Martial have to play.
