Defenders

Luke Shaw – 6

The left-back was solid in defence and supported Anthony Martial well but didn’t put enough crosses in from out wide. He needs to start adding assists to his game before he can be mentioned in the same sentence as the likes of Benjamin Mendy and Andy Robertson.

Phil Jones – 7

Jones made some pretty unconventional saves as always. But what can we say? The man puts his body on the line for United – and that’s all we ask of the players. He’ll be a solid option this season with Victor Lindelof out with injury.

Chris Smalling – 7

The centre-back isn’t known for his ball-playing ability and yet he was coming out with some Pirlo-esque passes from the back. Okay – I wouldn’t go that far. But his confidence to pick a pass out should be praised and encouraged going forward.

Antonio Valencia – 5

The 33-year-old showed just why fans see him as the most frustrating player at the club. Valencia is so one dimensional, it’s shocking. How many times have we seen him bomb down the pitch and either over or under hit a cross? Mourino should’ve given Diogo Dalot a chance tonight…
