Tahith Chong should make his Manchester United first team debut against Everton
By Ali Akbar
After a string of uninspired performances by Manchester United’s forwards, Jose Mourinho must try something radical if he wants to rescue the Red Devils’ season. Tahith Chong might be just the kind of player who could reinvigorate this lacklustre side.
You know things are dire at Manchester United when all of us are crying for an 18-year-old reserve team player to come in and save our season. But that’s exactly what needs to happen if we want to turn things around.
Tahith Chong has been a phenomenal player for Manchester United’s academy since joining them from Dutch side Feyenoord. He was promoted to the Under-23s this season and looks better and better each game he plays.
Jose Mourinho was so impressed by the youngster that he decided to hand him his first call-up to the senior squad in the Champions League fixture against Juventus at Old Trafford last week.
But alas, Chong was merely an unused substitute in the abysmal 1-0 defeat. In fact, Mourinho did not make a single change that game – a bizarre decision which really irked me and many other United fans. Considering the game-challenging talent anyone familiar with him knows he has, why wasn’t Chong brought on at any point in the game to at least try to salvage a point? What did we have to lose?
Many would point out that Chong is far too young to come on and make a difference against an experienced European side, but I’d beg to differ. Just look at Jadon Sancho at Borussia Dortmund.
While we were struggling to a snatch a point at home against Juventus, the 18-year-old English sensation was helping his side to a 4-0 victory against Atletico Madrid, scoring his first Champions League goal in the process. If Dortmund can afford to play a youngster in such a big game against a top European side at home, so can we.
Now that that opportunity has passed, there is a much less risky game for the young winger to make his first-team debut in – our Premier League game against Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Although we did thrash Everton 4-0 in this fixture last time around, they are by no means a pushover side under new manager Marco Silva this season. They would provide a significant challenge to United, but much less so than Juventus did.
This is the perfect time to introduce Chong into the first team. In front of a friendly crowd, against a smaller but still tricky opposition and in a game where there’s not as much pressure to perform – as we all know that we’re out of the title race already.
All us United fans want to see at this point is good football being played by promising young players. Can you give us that at least, Jose?
