Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United career is still on the line after turgid performance against Juventus

After yet another defeat in Manchester United’s 2018-19 campaign, rumours of a falling out between Jose Mourinho and his board have resurfaced. A defeat against Everton on the weekend could cost the Portuguese his job.

Last week, I said that Jose Mourinho could lose his job if Manchester United lost to his old club Chelsea. Thankfully, that didn’t happen, as the Red Devils miraculously left Stamford Bridge with a point after going 1-0 down in the first half.

There were many positives to take from that performance, as Ollie Slack explained in his post-match analysis. However, we knew that one good result was not enough and that United would have to put together a string of good performances in order to start building up momentum again.

Well, that opportunity was promptly wasted after the 1-0 defeat to Juventus at home in the Champions League just days later. Now we’re back to square one, putting the players under even more pressure to avoid embarrassment against Everton on Sunday.

Worse still are reports which suggest that the board has warned Mourinho to stop his public outbursts in front of the press. Indeed, it’s getting really tiring seeing Mourinho throw his players under the bus after every poor result. This frustration is likely felt by the board also, who perhaps want to avoid players wanting to leave the club after being alienated by their manager’s criticisms.

Since the Portuguese’ relationship with the club appears to be as volatile as ever, the chances that a poor result on the weekend could lead to him being sacked are even more likely than before. For Mourinho’s sake, let’s hope the boys grab all three points on Sunday…
