Manchester United’s lacklustre performances this season show that they still need to sign another midfielder

Manchester United’s lack of creativity over the last few games shows that we are still in dire need of another midfielder. If Jose Mourinho doesn’t make the right reinforcements in January, things could go from bad to worse at Old Trafford.

I know what you’re thinking – why am I calling for Manchester United to bring in midfield reinforcements when we recently signed Fred for £47 million this summer? But hear me out.

Fred looks like a decent player, and yes he was a pretty expensive acquisition for the club. But I don’t think he provides nearly enough creativity on his own to bolster our lacklustre midfield.

At best, Fred is merely a good rotation option for Paul Pogba when he’s in need of a rest. Instead, we need a midfielder who can partner the Frenchman side-by-side in midfield to alleviate the burden of creating chances.

Look at all the best three-man midfields over the years. They did not rely on one doing all the work while the other two sat back and did nothing. Think Andres Iniesta and Xavi, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne. You get the picture.

In the recent 1-0 loss to Juventus at Old Trafford, Pogba seemed like the only player who was trying to create chances for United’s front three. And it showed in our match statistics – just 8 chances in 90 minutes at home is abysmal no matter which team you’re talking about, let alone Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho did not use any of his substitutions that night even though Fred was available on the bench – suggesting that the manager doesn’t seem to rate him all that much either. If this really is the case, the club need to consider signing another star midfielder.

Before we signed Fred this summer, we were linked to players such as Bayern Munich’s Arturo Vidal (who went on to join Barcelona), Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and Napoli’s Jorginho (who has since joined Chelsea). Either one of these three midfielders would have been an exceptional midfield partner for Pogba while Nemanja Matic sat deep. But like always, United never seem to be able to get the players they want and are forced to pay extra for someone of a lower calibre.

The board and the manager don’t appear to be seeing eye to eye at the moment, but if they want to avoid sinking the club even lower in the Premier League table, they need to start looking for a quality midfielder to buy in January. Let’s just hope it’s not too late for United this season…
