Against Colombia on Tuesday, with the scores level at 1-1, many fans were once again calling for Rashford to be brought on. But Gareth Southgate resisted until the last few minutes of the extra time to bring him on. Suggesting the England boss was happy for the match to be decided on penalties.
Rashford showed years beyond his age as he walked up to take England’s second penalty. And the Manchester United star powerfully struck the ball into the bottom left corner like a seasoned pro.
Perhaps Young was handed a lifeline to start against Colombia, but the 33-year old certainly quietened the critics.
Once again Young posed a great threat down the left wing whilst also maintaining his defensive duties. His set-piece delivery was once again perfect as England looked like scoring every time they won a free-kick.
Young was substituted towards the end of the match as he seized up with cramp, but there should be no questions as to who starts England’s Quarterfinal against Sweden.
