Phil Jones – 7/10
Phil Jones started the season how every Manchester United fan wanted him to. The potential had been shown for a number of years if he were to keep fit he could become a mainstay in the defence for years to come.
He started the first nine games of the Premier League season alongside partner in crime Eric Bailly. And United looked very solid. The partnership had a lot of fans excited about what was to come.
But, unsurprisingly, it never lasted long. Jones had a hamstring injury which kept him out for five games in December. He returned to United’s defence once again and played a further nine consecutive games, culminating in an embarrassing own goal against Spurs at Wembley. A later hamstring injury kept him out once again for six games but the centre-half returned for the business end of the season.
Both Jones and Smalling returned to Wembley for the first time since that dreadful day against Spurs in January and were instrumental in helping them beat the same opponents in the FA Cup semi-final.
