Pre-Season

Wayne Rooney did not feature in the first two pre-season friendlies as he was on vacation after Euro 2016. The England captain did make it for the friendly against Galatasaray and scored 2 goals. Rooney started in the Community Shield against Leicester City and played 87 minutes before coming off for Morgan Schneiderlein.

Start of the Season

Rooney had a rough start to the season despite scoring a goal and providing 2 assists in his first three matches. The England man seemed to be slow on the ball and was unable to keep up with the pace of his teammates. Eventually, Jose Mourinho dropped him to the bench and he never really was able to get back in the starting lineup on a consistent basis.

Mid-Season

Rooney started the start of the new year with a goal and an assist against Reading. He added an amazing free kick to his goal tally against Stoke City as well. He was still on the outskirts of the starting lineup and he spent most games watching from the sidelines. Rooney did not even feature in the EFL Cup final match against Southampton.

End of the Season

The attacker ended the season strongly with goals against Burnley, Swansea City, and Tottenham. He showed that he still can play a role in the Manchester United team and may have a year or two more with the club. He is an incredible player but with the emergence of Marcus Rashford and the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Rooney could not break into the lineup.

Overall Stats

Rooney appeared 38 times for Manchester United this season. He scored 8 goals and provided 8 assists. These numbers show he still has quality and can contribute to Manchester United on the goal scoring front.
