Futile attempts of a purchase

The failure of him trying to cement a place in the first team was widely blamed on his unplanned transfer. But, in reality, he had already been scouted by United a lot of times before. Sir Alex Ferguson first spotted him in a match for Athletic Bilbao and wanted to bring him to Manchester.

The Spaniard has always been a great admirer of the Manchester club and was ready to be moulded into a great player. But it was not to happen as Athletic Bilbao rejected any bids submitted by Manchester United. Even after that, David Moyes tried to sign him but was unsuccessful in his attempt. After a number of failed bids, the Spaniard was brought in labelled as a great potential.
