Reds on Reddit: Opinions on Opinions #2

The sequel is here and does not disappoint.

Over on Reddit, Manchester United fans  have been having their say following the disappointing 1-1 draw with West Ham in the Premier League. We looked at loads of points on the busy red devils sub-reddit and found these comments.

If you’re a member on Reddit be sure to subscribe for plenty of Manchester United chat. And if you aren’t, why not sign up today?

Lets take a few points raised by them and give some opinion on their opinions.

1) LVG has been psychologically affected by 5-3 against Leicester, he just seems too afraid to lose. Predictable boring football with some poor formations. (from drkliener)

The defeat seems like such a long time ago for most fans but for van Gaal, maybe it is never going to leave him. It was an embarrassment for the club, but most of all it was an embarrassment for himself.

He had impressed everyone at the World Cup leading a seemingly average Dutch team to the semi-finals and had already built himself quite the legacy around Europe’s elite clubs. Conceding 5 goals against a mediocre at best Leicester side was unthinkable.

Therefore increasingly, we have seen van Gaal trying to play safe football which has left him unable to fully utilise the attacking quality of Falcao and van Perise and means Herrera is left out of the team when he really should be starting.

The decision to go with wing-backs has been one of the most potent talking points of the season but more and more attention is being turned towards the midfield problems. Blind showed how good a player he can be, we just need to see it more often. The idea of predictability can be taken both ways because sometimes he can be second guessed easily (such as leaving Herrera on the bench) – but at other times nobody has the slightest idea what the Dutchman could conjure up next. For better or for worse.

United have lost their flair which is both a shame and a disgrace given the names in that team who are really quality players. Whether van Gaal recovers in time to revert back to the old ways is the question.

2) The new Forlan. He deserves success; it’s just not going to happen with us. (from Dan_Ashcroft)

Ah yes, Diego Forlan. One of the best strikers in the game – but not while he was with United. Which was a real shame because the blonde haired Uruguayan was a terrific striker on his day and was voted the best player at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa as well as finishing top scorer. Currently winding down a remarkable career in Japan, he played well for United but sadly not quite well enough.

The same parallels can arguably be drawn about Falcao. He like Forlan arrived in Manchester with a fearsome reputation and the expectation to be the clubs ticket to the title. This has not proved to be the case and while the argument is there that he is not solely to blame (van Persie has escaped criticism) he definitely is not the player United were looking for and thought they had got.

If he leaves Old Trafford at the end of season, the best of luck to him but he needs to find a different league to the Premier League. He simply is not cut out for it.

3) The way we played today I wouldn’t be surprised if De Gea handed in a transfer request (from Stuck_In_A_Box)

In all fairness, the defence was not really to blame for the dismal performance against West Ham but the fact remains that De Gea proved once again he is arguably the best player at United this season. And if not the best, undoubtedly the most important player in the team.

United have done nothing to show him why he should stick around at Old Trafford instead of answering the calls from Real Madrid and heading over to the European champions. Defensively things have got better but in the rest of the field things don’t look good.

The goalkeeper is young, talented and hungry for success. At this rate he will not find what he is searching for at United, sadly. If United don’t improve soon, he has every reason to want out; and deserves a standing ovation for his commitment to the cause.

The entire team needs to step up to the plate and give De Gea some options and a reason to stay.
