Manchester United offer David De Gea new contract

Manchester United have finally offered goalkeeper David De Gea a new contract, according to Ian Ladyman of the Daily Mail.

The news comes just hours after the same man broke the story that Louis Van Gaal has opted to sign former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on an 18-month deal.

De Gea, who’s contract runs out in June 2016, has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for the last two years but talk has intensified in recent months with his contract situation becoming more and more prominent following a string of world class performances.

Talk of a new contract has been rife, with some reports that a new deal had already been agreed while others reported that the young goalkeeper would join Real Madrid for around £25 million in the summer. However, it seems Manchester United have finally made their move to keep the player at Old Trafford.

“..he [De Gea] and his family are not actively pursuing a move away from Manchester.”

According to Ladyman’s article, Ed Woodward and De Gea’s agent Jorge Mendes have accelerated talks over a new deal with news of Valdes’ signing and have moved talks forward to this month.

Mendes is happy for his client to stay at Old Trafford and while De Gea isn’t against a move back to Spain, he and his family are not actively pursuing a move away from Manchester.

Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos, the current understudy’s to De Gea,  have been deemed ‘not good enough’ by Louis Van Gaal which explains the decision to play De Gea in both games against MK Dons and Yeovil this season, meaning he has started every competitive game this season.

The Danish ‘keeper is likely to return to Scandinavia during the January window, while the club will not stand in the way of Ben Amos leaving the club should any clubs come in for him.

This is quite easily, the best news of the season so far for Manchester United fans. The future of De Gea has been the biggest talking point of the season, even more-so than results on occasion. His fine form this season has seen him propelled to the top of the list of goalkeepers in the Premier League, just a few years after being branded a flop by rival fans and journalists.

While De Gea is arguably still not quite on Manuel Neuer’s level, there is no goalkeeper any United fan would rather have between the sticks week in, week out and with the signing of Victor Valdes to go with it the Reds are now following the trend of having two world class goalkeepers amongst their first team ranks.
