Club record signing Angel Di Maria has been unveiled as Manchester United’s new No.7 after his £59.7M.
The Argentine winger signed from Real Madrid in midweek after being linked with a move away from the European Champions all summer. United eventually won the race for his signature, beating off interest from PSG and Monaco to bring him to Old Trafford in a deal that broke the British record for a transfer fee.
Guillem Balague had previously revealed that Di Maria would don the famous No.7 shirt upon his arrival, but the club only confirmed it today during Louis Van Gaal’s press conference to unveil the clubs newest acquisition.
Di Maria commented on being given the shirt, revealing he spoke to ex-Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo about it before he joined.
“I am aware of the No.7 shirt. I spoke to Cristiano about it and he explained it to me. I know how important it is. I really wanted to wear that shirt.
I am very pleased to be at Manchester United, I like the team. I wanted to come here even though they’re not in the Champions League.
I’m not bothered that my price tag was £60M. That’s between the chairmen. I’m here to play for Manchester United and do my best for the team.”
Di Maria is expected to start for Manchester United on Saturday lunchtime as they club travel to face Burnley at Turf Moor.
