Manchester United make bid for Marcos Rojo

Manchester United have officially submitted a bid worth £16M for Argentine defender Marcos Rojo.

The Sporting CP defender is a center back by trade although he is  more equipped to playing left-back, where he played for Argentina during the World Cup. It is expected he will provide cover for Luke Shaw at left-back while challenging for a starting berth in the three-man central defence.

Rojo had been targeted by Southampton as a replacement for another Manchester United summer signing, teenager Luke Shaw but the club’s most recent bid of €17M has been rejected. Manchester United have since stepped in with a €20M bid, which has reportedly triggered a release clause although Sporting are holding out for more.

Marcos Rojo has told Sporting he wants to leave and has handed in a transfer request. The defender refused to play in a friendly over the weekend and refused to train this morning in order to force through a move to Louis van Gaal’s side.

It is expected that the deal will go through before Manchester United’s curtain raiser with Swansea at the weekend, although whether it’s completed in time for him to play is a different matter.

Many fans have made their dismay at the signing known, having been linked with several big names such as Mats Hummels, Mehdi Benatia and Thomas Vermaelen over the summer. It’s also another transfer that has come out of the blue as once again the usually reliable journalists covering the club were none the wiser before news broke this morning in the Portuguese media.

Plenty feel underwhelmed and feel the club is over-paying for a player who isn’t ready to perform at the top level.

Portuguese football expert Jan Hagen (@PortuBall) recently stated that he doesn’t feel Rojo is good enough for a “top club” either at left back or center back.

A bit sluggish on the ball and not very good positionally, it’s hard to see what Van Gaal sees in Rojo other than the fact he’s left footed and can play in multiple positions. He is a threat from set-pieces however, while he is quick covering ground.

Rojo played at left-back for Argentina during the World Cup as they finished runners-up to Germany in Brazil, where he played in every game scoring one goal.

What are your thoughts on the transfer? Are we happy with the player/fee?
