Louis Van Gaal was interviewed by English media today and gave yet another strong impression for Manchester United fans to be happy about.
The Dutch manager, who took over from club officially just two weeks ago, was completely honest during his interview and we’ve picked out some of the best quotes from the short talk.
“For me it’s always very important, the choice of the captain because he is the captain on the pitch and can enlarge my influence.”
“The captain doesn’t have to be the most senior player. For me it’s more the personality and the mentality and the way he stands in line. It’s very important.”
On moulding the squad being easier with a younger squad:
“No. When you have players who are 16 or 30, they are human beings. They have their own personality. I can work with a 35 year old but I can also work with a 16 year old. It is dependable of their personality.”
“I don’t buy players for buying players. I buy players to improve my selection. First I need to see all the positions for the system we’re going to play. For now, I don’t know if we’re going to play this system. When we play 4-3-3, we shall use the same players. But I need more specialists on the wings and more attackers. Then we have to buy another kind of player.”
On why he chose this 343 system:
“That’s also one argument, why I chose this system because I can play them all [Mata, Rooney, van Persie]. But we don’t forget the others. We can’t forget that Hernandez can play in the striker position, Welbeck can play in the striker position and maybe Will Keane can play in the strikers position. Then Rooney too, he can play in 9, 10 and he told me he can play 7 or 11 too.”
On squad he inherited:
“When there is success you have a very good squad, and now I have to follow and the squad was broken I think.
“When you look at the squad, there is quality. There is [Wayne] Rooney, [Robin] van Persie, [Javier] Hernandez, [Danny] Welbeck, but you also see Juan Mata, [Marouane] Fellaini, and you see [Ander] Herrera. There are a lot of players that can play in the same position. It is not in balance. It’s more difficult to succeed in a difficult situation than in a fantastic situation.”
